Description
First Star Software's Boulder Dash, released in 1984, is a captivating maze-based puzzle game designed by Peter Liepa and Chris Gray. Players control Rockford, who must tunnel through dirt to gather diamonds while avoiding falling boulders and other dangers. The game's clever puzzles are based on exploiting interactions between objects, setting it apart in the retro gaming world. Converted for many 8-bit and 16-bit systems, Boulder Dash was also the first home computer game to transition into a coin-operated arcade video game. With its unique gameplay and influence on many subsequent games, Boulder Dash remains a classic in the genre of rocks-and-diamonds games.
Game Controls
The NES version of Boulder Dash is controlled via a cross-shaped joypad and two action buttons. Use the D-pad to move Rockford in four directions. Pressing A or B while moving allows Rockford to dig mud or pick up diamonds. Holding down A and B simultaneously for more than a second permits escape from a trap at the cost of one life. Press SELECT on the title screen to choose between a one or two-player game and press Start to begin a new game or pause a running game.
